This year’s Smithfield Awards was once again a glittering occasion with the pinnacle of the day being the presentation of the Diamond Awards by successful restaurateur, celebrity chef and Q Guild friend - Brian Turner.
Butchers Hall was bustling with excitement as the 110 members, guests and corporate members awaited the results. It was Mark and John Turnbull of R Turnbull & Son in Alnwick who were awarded the Supreme Overall Diamond Award for their Garlic & Chilli Dry Cured Bacon. The judges awarded the Bacon 100%. As well as Overall Diamond it won a Diamond in the Bacon and Cured Products Category and the BPEX Award for best pork product in the competition.
Mark said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive these awards; as a Q Guild member we regard ourselves as among the best butchers in Britain and this proves we have the products to match.”
The awards are among the most highly coveted in the meat industry and a true indication of excellence. More than 500 products from Q members throughout the UK were assessed by an independent panel of experts.
Before presenting the awards Brian Turner, a good friend of the Q Guild who has previously headed the judging panel at the National Barbecue Championships, addressed his well fed audience.
“The Q Guild is the Elite of the butchers and I have made three main observations about the Guild, Quality in everything you do, the outstanding service you provide and the craft skills which are so prevalent within the Q Guild. With the average age of the butcher increasing it is essential that we do not lose these core traditional butchery skills from the industry.”
